On the rocky cliffs of Hvar’s southern side lies Zaraće, a village 6 km from the city of Hvar. At the base of this picturesque village, two deep coves with pebble beaches nestle against the rugged cliffs: Velo Zaraće faces east, and Malo Zaraće west. These beaches, enclosed by stunning rocky cliffs, are not only scenic but also popular with swimmers and underwater enthusiasts, thanks to the area’s rich marine landscapes. The village offers delightful accommodation and has several inviting restaurants.
Legend has it that an Arabian vessel loaded with treasures once sailed along the southern shores of Hvar. Commanded by a crew experienced in navigating the Mediterranean, they faced storms and battles fearlessly. Yet, destiny had other plans, and their journey ended tumultuously along Hvar’s coast, where the ship sank during a fierce storm, claiming many lives. The survivors found refuge in Zaraće’s sheltered bays and eventually settled there, establishing a village that became a testament to their resilience.
Historically, Zaraće appears to have developed in the 19th century on land once owned by the Dominican Order. Always a small community, has remained somewhat obscure in the broader historical context of the island.
Today, Zaraće is a serene hamlet perched on a gentle slope, midway between the historic town of Stari Grad and the vibrant city of Hvar. A single street winds through the village, lined with stone houses that feature antique lintels, weathered fences, and rustic cone-tiled roofs. A traditional bocce court and the weathered public well, marked by deep notches from years of use, are silent witnesses to a leisurely past. The abandoned schoolhouse, with its faded slogans, adds to the historical ambiance.
Despite its historical charm, Zaraće experienced a revival at the turn of the millennium. The construction of a new road in 2000 rejuvenated the village: old houses were restored, and new residents arrived, bringing vitality to its quiet streets.
Below, the road leads toward bustling towns, while above, the Church of St. Nicholas and the charming Church of Our Lady of Health keep watch. The beaches below invite families to enjoy the shallow waters and divers to explore the undersea world.
Despite its modern connections, Zaraće retains a peaceful, timeless quality. From its elevated position, the view extends to the horizon, offering a glimpse of eternity amidst the natural beauty of Hvar’s southern shores.
Cats
Like all villages, the village Zaraće is home to quite a number of cats. While we adore the charming cats of Zaraće village, we kindly request that you refrain from feeding or petting them during your stay. This ensures that they don’t gather around the villa and potentially cause any mess. Additionally, it helps accommodate future guests who may have allergies or other preferences. Thank you for your understanding and your cooperation.
Millipede
We would also like to inform you that in our village of Zaraće, occasional centipedes may be spotted, especially during periods of rain or high humidity due to the natural environment. Please rest assured that these creatures are harmless and simply seek shelter. While we do our best to minimize their presence, we apologize if any find their way onto the terrace of the house. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities, and we appreciate your understanding. Should you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Starigradski Ager, located on the island of Hvar in Croatia, is a remarkable example of ancient agricultural practices dating back to the 4th century BC. This UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses an intricate system of stone walls known as “trim,” which were meticulously constructed to create parcels of arable land on the steep slopes of the island. These terraces effectively prevent soil erosion and optimize water retention, enabling farming in a challenging terrain.
The agricultural landscape of Starigradski Ager reflects the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, showcasing sustainable farming methods developed over centuries. The cultivation of grapes, olives, and other Mediterranean crops thrives within this ecosystem, sustaining local communities and preserving cultural heritage.
